IBM to let UT faculty, students use software

IBM Corp. and the University of Texas continue to tighten their
already close relationship.

The computer giant, which employs about 6,000 people in Austin,
said it will give UT students and faculty access to IBM software
valued at about $5 million. IBM employees also will work with
university to help train and educate students and staff on the
technology as part of the company's Academic Initiative program,
which is designed to foster closer ties to universities and colleges.

Meanwhile, IBM said it will have two full-time employees working
at UT in connection with the second phase of a grid-computing
research project.

"We've had a longstanding relationship with IBM," said Greg Lavender,
associate chair of academics in the Department of Computer Sciences.

"What's unique is it raises the bar. They've always hired our students
and had faculty they've sponsored for research projects. This is a much
broader initiative. It's an opportunity to have broader relationship with
their people."
