  Jesse Kriss

Staff Software Engineer

Contact: Jesse.Kriss@us.ibm.com

Research Interests:
visualization
interaction design
tools for artistic performance

Jesse Kriss joined the Collaborative User Experience (CUE) Research group in May 2005 as a Staff Software Engineer, with a focus on the design and implementation of interactive information visualizations. He works in Martin Wattenberg’s Visual Communication Lab and is currently prototyping a number of different early-stage projects. While studying with Golan Levin at Carnegie Mellon, Jesse developed a Java-based visualization of the history of sampling (musical borrowing) in hip-hop music. He also created MaxLink, a library that allows communication between Max/MSP and Processing, programming languages and environments for people who want to program images, animation, and sound, especially for artistic performances.

Whether working on information visualization, interaction design, or tools for artistic performance, Jesse is interested in shortening the feedback loop between creation and response, so that time can be spent reacting and improving the idea rather than dealing with the tools themselves. Jesse holds a Master’s Degree in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University and a BA in Music from Carleton College, where he studied composition with Phillip Rhodes and developed a computer-based performance instrument for real-time sampling.
