Amnon Shabo (Shvo)

PhD, Researcher in healthcare and life sciences informatics

A researcher in the healthcare and life sciences group at the IBM Haifa Research Lab, Amnon Shabo has worked on a number of healthcare domain projects since joining IBM in 2000. His first major project was the Integrated Medical Records (IMR) project, in which he helped further develop the concept of Electronic Health Records (EHR)—digitally stored records that contain an individual’s accumulated lifetime health-related data.

Currently, Amnon focuses most of his efforts in working with HL7, the health standards development organization focused on clinical and administrative data. He was instrumental in initiating the HL7 Clinical Genomics Special Interest Group, and he currently leads that SIG as its co-chair and facilitator. In addition, Amnon is a co-editor of the CDA (Clinical Document Architecture) specification developed by the Structured Documents Technical Committee. He is also active in the Templates and Electronic Health Records working groups in HL7.

As a leader of the HL7 Clinical Genomics SIG, Amnon works with a variety of health organizations that are interested in using clinical genomic data standards, including the FDA, CDC and National Cancer Institute.

Amnon brings a diverse educational background to his work in the healthcare domain. He has B.Sc. degrees in mathematics, biology, and computer science, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D in learning technologies, all from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In his post-doc work at the Georgia Tech College of Computing, Amnon focused on case-based reasoning methodologies in learning and visualization applications.
