Drs. Isaac Chuang (left) and Costantino Yannoni operate IBM's quantum computer, which uses the interactions of nuclear spins within a specially designed molecule to perform calculations in a manner that is exponentially more powerful than conventional computers. The spins are programmed by a series of radiofrequency pulses and the answer is revealed by a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. [ Magnified Image ] [ Get permission to re-use ]
